Mill Valley Residence

Mill Valley, California

This home and the site were designed for a creative and progressive couple who wanted a modern home and office with a sensitive, ecologically sound garden. The home and studio were built to replace their long-time family home.  We worked closely with the architect, owners and builders to lead the visitor in to a space embraced both by garden and structure.

A sensitive approach to materials selection, grading, paving, walls, planting, irrigation and circulation led to a modernist space that slowly and consciously releases its architectural grip on the site as one wanders the grounds and leaves the buildings.  We worked closely with the owner to create varying vantage points and perspectives on the site, salvaging many of her garden plants and integrating them in to the space.  The pool was conceived for his daily long-distance swim sessions.  The design includes multiple bio-swales to treat and infiltrate roof runoff as well as a gray water system to irrigate portions of the garden.  The house was designed by 361 Architecture.
