The land tells you what to do, if you listen...
Roth/LaMotte Landscape Architecture began when the principals, Gary Roth and Shelby LaMotte, met in the Graduate School for Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. They worked together on academic and professional projects throughout their graduate studies while studying with leading thinkers in the fields of ecology, ecological design/planning and urban design, including Ian McHarg (Design with Nature) and James Corner (Field Operations). Roth/LaMotte Landscape Architecture grew out of their studies, their work and their joint love and appreciation for each other and the world around them.
GAry Roth
Gary Roth grew up in San Anselmo, California and spent his childhood hiking the trails of the Bay Area and Sierras on the heels of his mother and father. Upon returning to the Bay Area after graduate school, Gary worked for over ten years with the Office of Lawrence Halprin in San Francisco on large National Park and other public projects. Gary received his Landscape Architecture license from the State of California in 1998.
Shelby LaMotte
Shelby LaMotte began her career in New England as a young girl caring for animals, riding through the woods and then running a small landscape construction and gardening business in Vermont. She worked with the Office of Peter Walker and William Johnson before she started our firm, building up a strong clientele for over 20 years. Since 1998, Shelby has been a California licensed Landscape Architect.
